As we commemorate International Women's Day on March 8th, it's an opportune moment to reflect on the incredible journey of women supporting each other in the workplace—a cornerstone in our shared quest for gender equality and a more inclusive world. This solidarity is not just about mutual encouragement; it propels us towards a future where women's contributions are recognized and valued equally.
In the spirit of gratitude that permeated my previous acknowledgment of the remarkable women who've shaped my journey, I want to delve into why this network of support is crucial and how we can further nurture it.
The Catalyst for Change
The workplace is always evolving, but the necessity for women to support each other remains constant. This support system serves as a catalyst for dismantling the barriers that hinder women's professional advancement. As we've seen, the backing of female mentors, sponsors, and colleagues isn't just beneficial—it's transformative.
Amplifying Voices in Unison
Our collective voice is more powerful than any single one of us speaking alone. By championing each other's achievements and advocating for our rightful place in leadership roles, we amplify our presence and influence in all spheres of life. It's about creating ripples of change that grow into waves of progress.
Strengthening Our Bonds
To continue fostering this environment of support and growth, we have to be intentional in our actions. Here are some ways we can strengthen our bonds and ensure that every woman feels empowered to reach her full potential:
Mentorship and Sponsorship: Actively seek out opportunities to mentor or sponsor fellow women. Sharing your knowledge and opening doors for others can have a profound impact on their careers and on the culture of your workplace.
Celebrate Achievements: Make it a habit to celebrate the successes of your female colleagues- big and small. Recognition not only boosts morale but also highlights the significant contributions women make to their fields.
Advocate for Inclusivity: Champion policies and practices that promote inclusivity and equity. This includes everything from fair hiring practices, compensation, leave policies, to support for working parents.
Build Networks: Encourage the formation of networks and groups within your workplace or industry that provide a space for women to share their experiences, challenges, and advice.
Educate and Raise Awareness: Continue to educate yourself and others about the importance of gender equality. Follow and support folks who are out there making a difference. Awareness is the first step towards change.
A Call to Action for all People
On this International Women's Day, let us recommit ourselves to the cause of women supporting women. Let's build on the foundation we've laid by deepening our connections and expanding our network of support.
Let's make every day a day where we lift each other up, knowing that together, we're unstoppable. As we move forward, let's carry with us the wisdom of those who've paved the way and the energy of those who join us now in this vital journey towards a more equitable world.
I encourage you to reach out to a woman who has made a difference in your life and express your gratitude. Let her know that her support has not gone unnoticed. Together, let's celebrate the progress we've made and the journey ahead, filled with endless possibilities.
In my own career, I have deeply benefitted from being mentored and supported by other women and also from mentoring and sponsoring other women. Although it would be impossible to list them all here, I want to say a special thank you to Carolyn Scott, Jenni Kotowski, Jane Scott, Reitu Mabokela, Jan Lloyd Lesley, Pam Cavanaugh, Tiffany Sanchez, Donna Viens, Sheri Rowland, Jillian Ransammy, Bethany Parmer, Monica Brotons, Melissa Villafañe, Jenn Unterbrink, Melissa Shivers, Pauline (Dobrowski) Burke, Shelia Higgs Burkhalter, Pato Lin-Steadman, Tina Hart, Latoya Arthur, Sandra Martinez, Araiña Muniz, Sherri Watson, my mom Christine Brady and my bonus mom Tish Kilpatrick. Thank you all for the support that you have poured into me and also for inviting me to champion you and your growth. I would be remiss if I didn't also thank Ronnie Kann, who passed away some time ago but left a lasting legacy in my life.
I also want to send a special word of encouragement to my seven-year old niece, Ella and our 12 year old son Fox. I'm working hard to help make this world a better and more inclusive place for you and your generation. I love you and I believe in you.
