Actionable New Year's Resolutions for Executives

As we stand on the threshold of a new year, it's an opportune moment for executives to reflect on their leadership journey and set impactful resolutions for the road ahead.

Grounded in research and years of executive coaching experience, I have developed some actionable and realistic resolutions that can enhance your leadership skills and contribute to your organizational success in 2024.

Embrace Adaptive Leadership: Research from the Harvard Business Review emphasizes the importance of adaptive leadership in navigating uncertainties. Resolve to cultivate agility, making swift and informed decisions in the face of ambiguity.

Prioritize Inclusive Leadership: A study by McKinsey found that organizations with diverse leadership teams are more likely to outperform their peers. Commit to fostering inclusivity by actively seeking diverse perspectives in decision-making processes.

Cultivate Emotional Intelligence: Daniel Goleman's research underscores the impact of emotional intelligence on leadership effectiveness. Resolve to enhance self-awareness, empathy, and interpersonal skills, creating a more connected and resilient leadership approach.

Leverage Technology Strategically: In a world rapidly embracing digital transformation, resolve to stay abreast of technology trends. Deloitte's research suggests that technology-savvy leaders are better equipped to drive innovation and organizational growth.

Invest in Continuous Learning: A survey by LinkedIn found that executives who prioritize learning are more adaptable and resilient. Commit to ongoing professional development, staying informed about industry trends and leadership best practices. This fall, I completed several fundraising courses through UC Davis, completed my PMP certification, and immersed myself in various AI tools. These explorations not only improved my knowledge and understanding of key concepts in my field, the act of learning was transformative at a pivotal moment in my career.

Nurture a Positive Organizational Culture: Research from the University of Michigan highlights the impact of organizational culture on employee engagement and performance. Resolve to foster a positive work environment by emphasizing communication, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose. (Note: I had a 4-week blog series focused on this topic in fall 2023).

In the words of Maya Angelou, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better." As executives embark on the journey of the new year, adopting these resolutions can pave the way for transformative leadership, bringing about positive change within themselves and their organizations.

I wish you every success in 2024!
