Research in Brief: A survey of over 3,000 Australian Higher Education professionals use of AI

Writer: Claire BradyClaire Brady

🚨 New Insights on AI in Higher Ed! 🚨

I'm always curious to see how higher education professionals are incorporating AI tools into their work, and a recent report from Australia shed some fascinating light:

  • 71% of the 3,421 university staff across 17 institutions reported using generative AI at work.

  • An impressive 216 different AI tools were reported across the board.

  • 1/3 reported that they only used one AI tool, and a 1/4 reported using two AI tools.

  • A small number of staff (around 4%) had used ten tools or more.

  • 88% of AI users are leveraging ChatGPT, while 37% use Microsoft Copilot.

These tools are being applied to a variety of tasks like:

📚 Literature searching

✍️ Writing & summarizing information

🎓 Course development & teaching

📊 Assessment methods

Yet, despite the growing interest, 30% of staff still haven’t tapped into AI at work.

A key takeaway: University staff are calling for clear policies, robust training, and investments in secure AI tools to help guide this technological shift.
