What Every Higher Ed Professional Should Know About AI

Writer: Claire BradyClaire Brady

Artificial intelligence isn’t the future of higher education—it’s already shaping it. While AI might seem like a futuristic concept, it’s now an essential tool woven into the fabric of education, transforming how institutions operate and how we engage with students.

In my work as an AI consultant, I don’t describe myself as a futurist—I’m a Now-ist. The transformative impact of AI isn’t waiting for tomorrow; it’s already here, revolutionizing higher education today. From enhancing productivity, to improving research and writing capabilities, to making higher education more predictive and more personalized. AI is offering solutions that touch multiple disciplines in ways we couldn't have imagined even a few years ago.

The Present Impact of AI in Higher Education

The influence of AI in higher education is profound, and it’s visible in several key areas. For one, AI helps free up valuable time by automating routine tasks, allowing educators and administrators to focus on higher-value activities like engaging with students and advancing institutional goals. But AI’s benefits go far beyond efficiency. It’s improving the quality of education itself by tailoring learning experiences to meet the unique needs of students, providing more accessible tools for learners with disabilities, and democratizing access to data for both educators and students. At a time when higher education faces unprecedented challenges, AI has the potential to help us meet the demands of our most critical academic missions and goals.

Revolutionizing Career Preparation

Beyond the traditional classroom, AI is transforming how students explore and prepare for their future careers. AI-driven tools are helping students explore career paths in ways that are more personalized and engaging than ever before. Additionally, institutions can use AI to align their programs with the rapidly changing demands of the workforce. Employers value graduates who are ready for AI-driven environments. Institutions that embrace AI will better prepare students for this reality, equipping them with the skills to thrive in a tech-driven world. By integrating AI into curricula, higher education can help bridge the gap between academic learning and the evolving needs of today’s employers.

A Call to Action for Higher Ed Professionals

It’s clear that the integration of AI in higher education is no longer optional—it’s necessary. As a champion for AI, I advocate for the responsible, thoughtful use of this technology to improve outcomes and meet the diverse needs of students, faculty, staff, employers, and other stakeholders.

AI holds the potential to democratize key aspects of higher education, enhance accessibility, and ultimately drive success for everyone involved. Now is the time to actively explore how AI can enhance our workflows and improve the student experience. From integrating AI-powered learning platforms to rethinking how we prepare students for AI-driven careers, we have the responsibility to lead this transformation and to be thought leaders at our institutions.
