In the latest annual survey by Inside Higher Ed and Hanover Research, the growing importance of AI in higher education is evident.

Here are some key findings:

🔹 Policy Development: Only 20% of institutions have published policies on AI use, while 63% have policies in development.

🔹 Training Demand: A whopping 92% of provosts report that faculty and staff are requesting more AI training, with 78% of institutions offering such training in the past 18 months.

🔹 Curriculum Review: Only 14% of institutions have reviewed their curriculum to prepare students for AI in the workplace, but 73% are planning to do so.

Provosts are enthusiastic about AI’s potential, with most seeing it as a tool to boost institutional capabilities. However, concerns about academic integrity and the need for strategic policies and training remain. Institutions that proactively address these challenges will lead in the AI-driven future of education.

This survey is conducted annually and this year's survey included 331 provosts from public and private institutions, for a margin of error of 5.04 percent.

The survey included questions on the following issues:

  • Artificial intelligence

  • Mental health

  • Diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Campus speech

  • Faculty and staff retention and faculty tenure

  • Course materials and assessment of student learning

  • Institutional effectiveness and change management
