Meet Your New Coworker. It Doesn't Sleep, Complain, or Miss Deadlines.

A note on perspective: I don’t have financial ties to the tech companies referenced here. My views are shaped by hands-on experience, not sponsorship. I’m not neutral about the tools I recommend—but I am platform-agnostic and focused on impact.

If you've ever wished you could hand off a stack of tasks and walk away — come back an hour later to finished, usable work — that moment has arrived. It's called Claude Cowork, and it may be the most practically useful AI development for higher education professionals since ChatGPT showed up in our lives two years ago.

Here's what it is, how it works, and why you should care.

What Is Cowork?

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's research preview that turns Claude into a digital coworker. You point it at a folder, describe what you need, and Claude figures out the steps and handles it. DataCamp Unlike the chat interface you're used to — where you ask, Claude responds, you ask again — with Cowork you can describe an outcome, step away, and come back to finished work: formatted documents, organized files, synthesized research, and more. Claude

Think of it less like a conversation and more like leaving a voicemail for a highly capable colleague. You describe the outcome. They handle it while you're in your next meeting.

How Does It Work?

You give Claude access to a folder of your choosing on your computer. Claude can then read, edit, or create files in that folder. Claude It uses connectors — including Slack, Chrome, Excel, and PowerPoint — to reach into the tools where your work already lives. Claude picks the fastest path: a connector for Slack, Chrome for web research, or your screen to open apps when there's no direct integration. Claude You stay in control the whole time — Claude shows you the plan and waits for your approval before acting, and you can redirect, refine, or stop at any step. Claude

Who Can Use It?

Claude Cowork is available for paid plans — Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise — on both macOS and Windows. Claude If your institution has a Team or Enterprise Claude account, your admin can enable it and manage access across departments.

What Can It Actually Do?

This is where it gets exciting for higher ed professionals specifically. Here's what Cowork handles that used to eat your afternoons:

Research synthesis. Ask Cowork to pull information from multiple sources — web searches, uploaded documents, notes, reports — and deliver a coherent briefing document. Not a list of links. An actual usable document.

Data analysis. Drop a folder of survey results, program data, or assessment files and ask for a summary with key themes. Claude can generate Excel files with working formulas, conditional formatting, and multiple tabs — not just CSVs that need fixing. Claude

Presentation prep. Connected to PowerPoint, Cowork can build and refine decks using your institutional templates — useful for board presentations, faculty senate briefings, or accreditation prep.

Recurring tasks on schedule. With scheduled tasks, Claude can complete work for you automatically — weekly reports, recurring file processing, regular briefings — on a cadence of your choosing. Claude

Transcript and document analysis. Got a folder of meeting notes, focus group transcripts, or committee minutes? Ask Cowork to extract themes, action items, and patterns across all of them at once.

The Higher Ed Case

Higher education professionals are among the most over-tasked, under-resourced knowledge workers in any sector. We sit in committees, write reports, prep for accreditation, manage budgets, supervise staff, respond to students, and somehow also think strategically.

Cowork doesn't replace any of that judgment. But it handles the assembly work that eats the time you need for the judgment. That's not a small thing. That's the thing.

If you've been using Claude in the chat window and finding it helpful, Cowork is the version where Claude stops advising and starts doing. Worth trying. Worth talking about with your team.

One note: Cowork is still in research preview and rolling out gradually, so availability and features are evolving quickly. Check claude.ai for the most current information on access and eligibility — what's true this week may be even better next week.
