The Transformative Potential of AI in Student Affairs: A New Report for Higher Education Leaders

Glass Half Full Consulting and NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, with support from the Strada Education Foundation, are proud to release “The Transformative Potential of AI in Student Affairs: Recommendations for Student Affairs Leaders.”

Developed by Dr. Claire Brady, President of Glass Half Full Consulting, this short-form report serves as an actionable guide for practitioners seeking to understand the current state and future directions of artificial intelligence in student affairs.

As higher education continues to evolve in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, AI presents unprecedented opportunities to enhance how institutions support and engage students. From adaptive learning platforms to predictive analytics, AI enables personalization, operational efficiency, and proactive interventions that put students first.

At its core, the report emphasizes that AI should augment—not replace—human connection. By automating routine processes, AI frees professionals to focus on the relationship-centered work that drives student belonging, development, and success.

The report outlines a four-phase framework for AI adoption and highlights 14 pioneering use cases from colleges and universities across the country. Drawing inspiration from Complete College America’s (2023) “Do Now, Do Soon, and Work Toward” model, the framework adapts and extends this approach to address the unique opportunities and challenges within student affairs.

“AI adoption in student affairs isn’t about replacing people—it’s about reimagining what’s possible when technology supports our mission to serve students more equitably and effectively,” says Dr. Brady.

The report calls on student affairs leaders to embrace bold, innovative solutions while safeguarding the human element that defines higher education.
