An Executive's Guide to Inclusive Holiday Gatherings

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

With the winter holiday season approaching, the opportunity to lead inclusive celebrations is both a responsibility and a chance to strengthen the bonds within your community. Inclusive holiday celebrations align with organizational values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Leaders who prioritize these values not only create a welcoming environment but also set the standard for the entire organization.Inclusive gatherings demonstrate sensitivity to this diversity and reduce the risk of unintentional exclusion.

To ensure your holiday gatherings are inclusive and welcoming for everyone, consider the following strategies as executive leaders:

Communicate Openly: Clearly communicate the intention of an inclusive celebration. Emphasize the importance of diversity and the value each individual brings to the festivities.

Accommodate Diverse Traditions: Acknowledge and accommodate diverse holiday traditions within your community. This may involve learning about different customs and ensuring they are respected and included in the celebration.

Accessible Venues and Activities: Select venues and plan activities that are accessible to everyone. Consider any mobility or sensory challenges that participants may face, and strive to create an environment where everyone can engage comfortably.

Mindful Food and Beverage Choices: Be aware of dietary restrictions and preferences. Ensure there is a variety of food and beverage options to cater to different tastes and dietary needs.

Celebrate Non-Religious Traditions: Recognize that not everyone may celebrate holidays for religious reasons. Embrace the opportunity to highlight and celebrate secular aspects of the season.

Include Everyone in Planning: Encourage diverse perspectives in the planning process. Solicit input from various community members to ensure the celebration reflects the collective spirit.

Cultural Competence: Foster cultural sensitivity by avoiding stereotypes and respecting the cultural backgrounds of all participants. Create an environment where everyone feels seen and appreciated.

Provide an Opt-Out Option: Recognize that not everyone may wish to participate in holiday celebrations. Respect individual choices by providing a comfortable opt-out option without judgment.

Encourage Open Dialogue: Foster open conversations about inclusivity. Create a platform for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings, allowing for a better understanding of diverse perspectives.

Reflect and Learn: After the celebration, take time to reflect on what worked well and where there may be opportunities for improvement. Use this feedback to continually enhance the inclusivity of future holiday gatherings.

By adopting these strategies, you can lead holiday celebrations that not only reflect the beautiful diversity of your community but also strengthen the sense of belonging for everyone involved.
