"Organizations that foster authentic behavior are more likely to have engaged, enthusiastic, motivated employees and psychologically safe cultures." (Center for Creative Leadership, November 2020)
This past year has been challenging for Florida’s colleges and universities, as several 'Imperial CEO' Presidents have either stepped down or been removed from their positions. I work with 30+ organizations a year, thankfully these type of CEO's are the exception and not the rule. For those of you recovering from an Imperial CEO—leaders who prioritize power over people and control over collaboration—know that healing and rebuilding are possible. Healing might involve re-establishing trust within your teams, encouraging open communication, and fostering a sense of psychological safety. It’s about empowering leaders at all levels to contribute to decision-making, rekindling a sense of purpose and belonging among staff, and nurturing a culture where every voice is valued. Together, we can move forward to create an environment where authenticity, trust, and shared leadership are not just ideals, but daily practices.
Here is the good news. For the most part, the days of the "imperial CEO" are over. Today's complex world of work demands a different kind of executive leader – one who prioritizes human connection, growth, and collaboration. The Center for Creative Leadership defines authenticity in the leadership context as "the healthy alignment between internal values and beliefs and external behavior. Authenticity comes from finding your style and your way of leading — and making life decisions that reflect your ethics, values, and your personality."
This shift towards "human leadership" is driven by several key factors:
The Need for Agility: Leaders can no longer claim to have all the answers. The pace of change demands a willingness to learn and adapt alongside teams.
Managing Multiple Stakeholders: From social responsibility to employee well-being, leaders navigate a vast array of demands. Cultivating empathy allows for a more nuanced approach.
The Rise of AI: As artificial intelligence takes over routine tasks, the human touch becomes even more crucial. Leaders who inspire, develop, and connect with people will be critical.
Developing Your Inner Leader
The key to successful human leadership lies in self-awareness and self-reflection. Here's how to cultivate the essential qualities:
Humility: Acknowledge your limitations and embrace continuous learning. Encourage diverse perspectives and honest feedback.
Empathy: Put yourself in others' shoes. Understand their concerns and motivations to build trust and commitment.
Authenticity: Be genuine and true to your values. People connect with leaders who are comfortable in their own skin.
The Center for Creative Leadership advises that while it's crucial for leaders to understand the value of building trust and being genuine, this doesn't mean they should disregard professionalism, political awareness, or sound judgment in their actions.
These qualities allow you to:
Unleash Potential: Empower individuals and teams to contribute their best selves.
Navigate Change: Lead with flexibility and adapt to unexpected challenges.
Foster Purpose: Create a sense of meaning and belonging that motivates and inspires.

The Bottom Line
By embracing human leadership, you invest in your own holistic growth and the success of your organization. Shifting your focus from command-and-control to collaboration and empowerment can unlock a wealth of potential. This approach has proven beneficial for executive leaders in various industries, and it can be valuable for you too.
